<![CDATA[First impressions of volunteering can be positive or negative depending on who you are. Many people are afraid or think it is boring. The best way to get the full effects of volunteering is to try it! A teacher, three other Crossing students, and I went to Trinity Assembly of God in Ligonier on Friday the fifteenth to help serve food. Part of going to the Crossing as a student is being a part of Service Learning Opportunities or SLO’s. Usually a student’s first time doing an SLO is viewed as “work” and does not sound like a lot of fun. After our visit to Trinity Assembly of God to serve food and getting to know people in the community, we realized just how great volunteering is! We could not stop talking about how great it felt to serve and also how we can’t wait to do it again. It feels great to keep going back on Fridays and serve knowing that volunteering not only impacts them but the Crossing students as well. Being a leadership student, I find that a few other students are commonly asking me questions: Why do we have to do this? Is it hard? Are these people nice or mean? I used to ask the same questions. The best thing I feel that I can tell them is, “Try it once and you will love it!” Some find it extremely hard because they are so shy. I am also extremely shy! Being a leadership student has definitely helped me talk more. One student in particular is so shy that she usually hides behind people. I love to get her to talk more and do things out of her comfort zone. She finds it easier when we do something together so she doesn’t feel alone. I do know that when you volunteer, you work together, not alone!
VERY proud of my niece Brandy Saylor. Since she was little, she has never asked for anything for herself, we would have to pry out of her something small she even wanted for her birthday. Serving God, Family and Friends is her passion. I admire that in her and know that she will make change happen in her lifetime.
I love you Brandy!
